INTERFERENCES
A collaboration by Anni Rieck and Olaf Wiehler

What happens when calm is disturbed? In their project INTERFERENCES, Anni Rieck and Olaf Wiehler explore the space between stillness and irritation. Sculpture and photography enter an open dialogue, where works are shared, changed, and reimagined. Control is consciously released, and new forms emerge through intervention, trust, and collaboration.

The starting point of this experimental cycle was the wish to develop further and the question of how one’s work can change in an open process. What happens when calm becomes a material to shape, and disturbance is not confrontation but an impulse?

Rieck’s works come from inner processes: meditative structures, woven paper, stitched nets. Small sculptural forms built from patience, silence, and black light. Wiehler’s works begin with photographic observation: searching, sometimes disturbing, sometimes challenging. Blurs, smudges, and interruptions make the image itself a question.

A process of mutual engagement develops. Works are shared, altered, and re-read. What once “belonged” to one person is taken up, changed, or disturbed by the other. Wiehler photographed Rieck’s works and shifted their order toward irritation.

The resulting prints were cut, reassembled, scratched, and varnished. They carry traces of intervention, touch, and doubt – visible breaks as part of their story. Photographed sculpture becomes sculptural photography.

Especially now, when questions of authorship and artistic control are being discussed in relation to AI, Rieck and Wiehler rely on an analogue dialogue: sharing, intervening, allowing – based on mutual trust.

Calm and disturbance are not fixed states but open processes where overlap, intervention, and change are part of the artistic path.
